hackUST + hardUST is an annual hackathon at HKUST to develop your prototype, meet entrepreneurs and industry experts, pitch your ideas, enjoy unlimited free snacks, pizza, caffeine, and refreshments, and turn your boldest ideas into reality! hackUST runs for an electrifying 24 hours while hardUST runs for 48 hours!

hackUST + hardUST 2018 will be the most craziest hackathon yet. Participants will have access to the world’s number two-ranked Tianhe-2 supercomputer (developed by China's National University of Defense Technology) currently installed at the National Super Computer Center in Guangzhou (with peak performance of 94.97 petaflops after the recent upgrading). Participants can come up and test out their crazy ideas using the power of the super computer during hackathon at HKUST 2018.

hackUST + hardUST 2018 is open to all university students / alumni in the world. Don’t worry if you are not experienced enough – what matters is how fast you can learn and how willing you are to step out of your comfort zone! Don’t worry if you don’t have a team, we have pre-hack workshops as well as prior team formation sessions!

Workshop Speakers

Leo Chiu (Spike Ventures)

Leo is a hands-on practitioner and a tech savvy entrepreneur. After completing secondary education in Hong Kong, Leo fought his way into Stanford University, graduating with a M.S. degree in Management Science and Technology (aka Operations Research & Engineering Economics), one of the specialized fields out of the STEM discipline.
After graduation, Leo was recruited into Morgan Stanley New York office. Finding out wall street is not his cup of tea, Leo came back to Stanford and started his STEM career in Silicon Valley.
The last 4 big data/AI startups Leo served as core contributor all lead to successful IPO or M&A, with a combined market valuation of over US$1B.
Leo is currently the venture partner of the Spike Ventures (a venture fund for Stanford University Alumni), mentoring the youths and young adults in the greater bay area of China about innovation driven entrepreneurship via various mentorship programs and the mainstream media as public speaker and lecturer.

Dr. Dimitris PAPADOPOULOS

Dimitris Papadopoulos is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He has received his PhD degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Boston University in 2016 and worked as a Post-Doctoral researcher at the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies.
His research is focused on the construction of cryptographic protocols that balance between rigorousness of security guarantees and practicality. It also includes areas that span theoretical cryptography, applied network security, blockchain security, and economical aspects of secure cloud computing.
